Lipstick can brighten up your whole face and give you that 'polished' look. However, it often smears with a kiss or rubs off with that first sip of coffee. Long lasting formulas sounded like the perfect solution, but most of them feel gritty or dry on your lips. It's not so much about the formula but how you apply your lipstick that makes it last. Read on for step-by-step directions to put your lipstick on to last all day.

Step 1

Start with clean, dry lips. Don't apply any chapstick or anything similar that would prevent the lipstick from adhering to your lips. Dip a cotton ball in make-up remover and swipe across your lips to make sure they are clean.

Step 2

Line your lips with either a natural lip color or a color that matches your lipstick (don't go darker, it can make you look older or at least outdated). Focus the pencil on the outer edge of your lip line, which will prevent the lipstick from bleeding. Then fill your lips in all the way - this provides a base for the lip color to adhere to.

Step 3

Apply a first coat of lipstick. It's best to use a lip brush, which provides a more even application. Blot lightly.

Step 4

Apply a second layer of lip color and blot again. Finish with a light dusting of translucent powder to set your lipstick and help it stay put all day. If you want your lips to look fuller, add a dot of gloss, ideally one with a pearlescent finish, to the center of your lower lip and gently press your lips together.
