Barack Obama took a dig at Republican presidential rival during a speech Tuesday, comparing John McCain to George W. Bush with the comment “You know, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.”

Thanks to that barb, the Obama camp is underfire from critics who see the comment as a sexist potshot at Senator McCain’s VP pick, Governor Sarah Palin.

“I was just your average hockey mom. I love those hockey moms, you know, they say, ‘What is the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.’” Palin joked in her address the Republican National Convention last week.

Now, certain political figures are asking that Obama apologize to Palin for his “lipstick on a pig” comment.

“It’s disgraceful. Sen. Obama owes Gov. Palin an apology,” former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift tells the Associated Press, adding: “There’s only one woman in the race. It’s hard to think this was directed at anybody other than Gov. Palin.”

The Obama campaign says the Illinois senator was not referring to Palin, with advisor Anita Dunn calling outrage over the “pig” remark “a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy.”
