Lipstick formulations are mixtures of oils, waxes, and pigments. Lipsticks that provide long wear time are made out of high wax, low oil and high pigment concentrations. Creamy, smooth lipsticks are low in wax and high oil concentration.
Common waxes used in lipstick cosmetics are white beeswax, lanolin, wax, ceresin wax, candelilla wax, carnauba wax, and other synthetic waxes. Oils are then added to form a film suitable to be applied on lips and for dispersion of the pigments. Common oils found in lipstick cosmetics are castor oil, white mineral oil, lanolin oil, and hydrogenated vegetable oils. Coloring agents are then added to achieve the lip staining. The FDA has provided guidelines for cosmetic companies to ensure the safety of coloring agents used in lipsticks cosmetics.
Today there are countless choices of lip cosmetics. Lip gloss provides shine and lip liners help define and shape lips. And just as there are countless choices in lip cosmetics, there are lots of cosmetic companies that are competing for their market share. Finding and keeping loyal, repeat customers requires cosmetic companies to produce a quality product at a competive price.
It can be frustrating as a consumer to have found a shade that you like only to learn that the shade was discontinued. Then the search for a new lipstick is on and brand loyalty is challenged with a wide selection of competing brands.
